behold: an opera

What does it feel like after the rain? Can we sing like a mourning dove? How can we keep the colors of the sunset? From sun up to sun down- what can we see, hear, and touch?
behold is an opera for the very young that captures and amplifies the grandness of our everyday lives. Over the course of a day, Celeste and Fern awaken, explore, and experience a sunrise, birds, a rainstorm, sunset and moonrise. The ensemble of performers - on vibraphone, clarinet, percussion, and voice - guide little ones and caregivers in performance, play, and a sensory experience.
behold is an interactive experience in and around Kerfuffle's intimate yurt dome.
Kerfuffle is proud to be the company-in-residence at Writers Theatre for their 2025-26 season. behold will be shared through open rehearsals and workshop performances this year.

WHAT TO EXPECT:
Who should come?
Children aged 1-3 years old, though all are welcome. Caregivers are required to stay with or near their child throughout the duration of the rehearsal. The yurt dome seats 22 people so capacity is limited. We recommend a ratio of one adult to one child.
What is an open rehearsal?
Kerfuffle develops all of their work in direct partnership with children to better understand what engages, interests and delights them. An open rehearsal is a chance for the opera's artists to perform segments of the piece for children and see what is engaging, compelling, and interesting to them.
What will happen at the open rehearsal?
behold aims to capture and amplify the grandness of our everyday lives. behold explores the story of a day from sun up to sun down with sections of prepared music, improvisation, and sensory experiences. Participants will experience some of the music from the opera as well as explore sensory props and items in and around Kerfuffle's intimate yurt dome. Participants' reactions and engagement will help form ideas for the environment of the opera, which will perform in March at Writers Theatre.
How long will this last?
The open rehearsals will last about 45 minutes. The workshop performances are about 30 minutes long.
What is a yurt dome?
Kerfuffle's yurt is a 14 ft in diameter, 7 1/2 foot tall geodesic dome tent. See below for a picture!
Please note that the entrance to the yurt is 5 ft tall and adults may need to bend down to enter the yurt dome. Seating will be on the floor with cushions. Chairs are available upon request.
